In January 2018, Google launched an art and culture app that can add a historical and cultural look to the selfie. The app has been downloaded millions of times. However, the selfie feature has not been available to users in Illinois and Texas. Why is that?

Google did not make an official statement, which may be related to the biometric privacy laws in Illinois and Texas. The two big states are understood to have legislated and supervised the collection of user biometric behavior.

As of February 2018, the United States only in Illinois, Texas and Washington issued specific law about collecting biological information, such as retinal or iris scanning, fingerprints, voice print and facial geometry.

Now there are at least six big states are considering specific biometric privacy act, including Alaska, Arizona, California, Connecticut, Massachusetts and New Hampshire. It is reported that in related industries, companies have started to prepare new data protection regulations in May 2018.A series of non-eu countries are also pushing the trend, with the creation of biometric privacy laws and the release of the latest government advice on the collection of biometric data.
